Coth>PhysX>Cloth + Tearing?

Is there a way to sim a cloth binding setup using physx and still maintain the ability to use tearing?  I've been trying to get it to work but probably missing some simple yet essential step or setting.

Setup normally using a Cloth Bind operator and set the binding strengths to 0. Then add PhysX binds on top. The PhysX binds will control the particles, and the Cloth Bind operator will control the tearing.
