Shape: Instance Material

Hi, 

I am try to use different Multi/Sub-object materials on different objects in the shape list. 

In >Instance Material: I have tried using "Inherit from reference" and assigned "scene material" for each reference object in the list.

None of these methods seem to be having any effect on the rendered materials. Am I missing something basic?
