Animating several growing splines

Hi, Im trying to animate a bunch of growing splines (kinda like fungus) with a head where the spline also moves (so it looks more alive..like a snakes body). Im having a hard time figuring out how this setup should be. Ive managed to get the growing spline with a head fixed, but I cannot figure out how to get the stem to animate. Ive tried rope tutorial (but thats just for one spline and I cant make it work with a growing spline). 
Not sure if you guys understand what I mean. Ill post a picture so you guys can see what I am thinking about. 
As you can see I want the stems/splines to move like snakes...
