Particle collision with PhysX Rigid bodies? - newb question

Hi all - rookie question here

I have some particle shapes that are going through a collision test. After they collide they become a new event and fracture and then become a physX shape. 

I'd like the initial particle shapes to interact with the pile of physX shapes. Is this possible?

I tried keeping the particles as shapes the entire time, but once they fractured the broken pieces dont interact with the ground properly nor with each other at all, and they continue to spin/rotate in place which i think is leftover from the prior event. (what solved all these issues for me was turning them into the physX rigid bodies and why I went down that route)

any insight (even to my event orders) would be appreciate
