Would it be possible to allow negative strength values in the Point Force operator? I'd like to be able to create particle systems with suction/gravity.

Didn't even think about that...I'll enable that for the next build (which is going up soon)

You can use Force with MotionField Spacewarps for negative spherical gravity.
