Well you're definitely not using it wrong since crashing is something that should never happen...I'll try to reproduce the issue here.

The crashes are inconsistent across machines and I haven't been able to figure out why they're occurring, despite narrowing down the problem to a specific chunk of code.

So for now, no resolution unfortunately.
