How do you actually use distributed/network rendering?

Hmm, guess I need to look into this more, I've never used backburner (can't even figure out what Deadline is exactly), it seems most people that do this do this with online server stuff, whereas I'm wanting a local slave for this and figured I could just setup max/tyflow for this somehow without having to run through additional services.

So this is just a render time thing rather than a in production thing? I was hoping to get a machine to help speed up general computation work.
