Well that's a little different. In that case you'd want to sample the actual texmap and apply the resulting color value to the Vertex Color (mapping) channel if your choice. So there's a conversion necessary, but lucky for you that functionality is already in the Vertex Color operator in the next build, going out in a couple hours.
