It would be handy to have a 3D shape type that was a cluster of low poly spheres. Maya had that for its old scanline particle renderer. Would be great for creating a lot more particles out of few shen making splashes and waterfalls. Using random rotation and scale would probably be enough to hide that they're instanced.
