hi tyson , i was trying the new modifier and I found some strange behavior: irregular edges, doubling the number of vertices, Preserve boundaries on / off does not change anything.

Ah, thank you for the file. I know what's happening....tyRelax considers all edges, not just visible ones, when picking which verts to move towards during the adjacency calculations. Because of the way the your topology is set, the invisible edges in the middle of your quads are skewing the result. I'll make a note to change that in the next build.
