Image map to drive material selection

Hello all, 

  I would like to have some geometry(balls) that fall and hit the floor(not a problem) but what I want to do is use a texture map (Black and white) to determine which material to use.  Not set material color but choice which material to use (white=chrome and black = black).  Did that make sense.  I am trying to do a ball drop that will form into a logo and use a black and white image to drive the materials of the balls so when I pull back on the scene it will make the logo.
