universe large scale structure

I'm trying to replicate the large scale structure of the universe (attached image) without success.
I've been using Spline Paths and attempting to add some noise to the system. I can't seem to extend the spline threshold beyond a certain distance. And I still haven't found a way to introduce noise.

Any hints? Is there a better way to do it?
