I have found this stepping happening when using soft selection mode in TySelect. It looks like a deviation from the best fit curve.
I do not see this stepping when using 3dsMax's Volume Select. I am selecting vertices and a push modifier to move them away.
This image shows this happening to a plane with subdivisions. The same thing happens when using gizmo or a box as a mesh to select vertices. Each of the segments has a length of 50 Max Units and the whole plane is 10,000 Units Width 200 Units Length. The distance set in soft selection is 3500 Units.
I am not 100% sure whether this is a bug, but just in case.
