Spawn by travel bug when using position operators

I'm attempting to create a basic particle trail, but when I use Spawn by Travel Distance, the operator seems to be calculating the particle position from the scene origin rather than its initial position (in this case, using Position Icon).  So I get these weird straight lines of particles from 0,0,0 to their starting point.  After that it works normally.

Edit: Adding just a bit to this, the mode doesn't seem to matter.  I'm getting the error whether it's by travel or per second.  I've attached my scene.

Just adding to this, the spawn operator works fine if I send the particles into a new event. But if I keep them in the same event it causes this problem.
